About Daventry Choral

Founded on the enthusiasm of a few people and with the encouragement of the Rector of Daventry, Daventry Choral Society gave its first concert on Palm Sunday in 1990 when forty singers performed Fauré's Requiem with David Muggleton as its first Musical Director.

Giles Turner became Daventry Choral's Musical Director in 1992, an inexperienced conductor to a newly formed choir.  He brought the society to prominence as one of the region's leading amateur ensembles. He encouraged the choir to believe that they could continually improve their vocal skills.

In 2002 we welcomed Alexander Walker as our Musical Director and are enjoying his creativity and flair.  As a consequence, our recent performances have been received enthusiastically by our audiences.  This was undoubtedly true of our last concert of 2003 when the major work was Brahms' Requiem. Indeed, the complete programme for the evening was a success.

Daventry Choral has a membership of around 85.  It is the largest choir serving the town and surrounding villages, giving concerts three times a year. It aims to be the focal point for people of all ages to develop their interest and talent for singing, with weekly rehearsals and regular workshops led by trained specialists and to share this interest with the local community through concerts.

The society has gained recognition and awards from East Midlands Arts; Daventry District Council; the Millennium Fund, Awards for All; and R. Griggs Arts Marketing Fund. It is affiliated to the National Federation of Music Societies. On 31 March 2001 the society performed its first commissioned work, Requiem by David Fisher and on 28 June 2003 gave a world première performance of Jubilate Deo by Alan Charlton.  These were outstanding successes for both choir and composers.
